The Two Russias

When we lived in Tver, I often heard it said, somewhat with a mixture of both envy and disgust, by our friends there that there are two different Russias: Moscow, and the rest of Russia. In terms of the Russian universe, they contended, that the economic, social, and political center is located in Moscow. And, to those not in that sphere--the rest of Russia--often feel as if they are Pluto, for all of the lack of concern that comes there way.

Indeed, now living here in Moscow I have come to realize the amount of truth that lies within that sentiment. For example, any time that it snowed here in Moscow, immediately there were snow plows on the road, people shoveling the sidewalks, etc. In Tver, however, the paths always stayed snowy, such that we usually took David on his sled when we went out in the city. In Moscow, however, it was much harder to do, as the paths were quickly cleared from the snow. Also, now that the snow is almost completely gone (there is still, however, some hanging around or apartment entryway!), there are all sorts of people doing public works projects all over Moscow: cleaning trash, raking the grass, planting flowers, painting curbs, patching up potholes etc. There must be thousands upon thousands of city employees! I must admit, however, as one who now resides in this heart of the Russian universe, it is very pleasant to see how quickly the city is transforming itself. While those on the outside feel neglected, those on the inside--at least I do--appreciate these perks!
